The Underground Railroad didn't have any cars of trains going on it.

The Underground Railroad was used mostly by slaves.

Once slaves escaped they usually helped other slaves escape.

A lot of them escaped at night.

Some of them swam across the Ohio river to get away.       

The Story of Marquette and Jolliet by Conrad Stein - a book report

Marquette and Juliet lived with the Indians.

they taught the Indians about God.

they met Indians and made friends.

When Marquette went canoeing he tried to go over the rapids but his canoe hit a rock and broke the canoe and the water current  pulled Marquette under water and he hit his head on a rock.

Then some fishermen pulled him out and saved him from drowning.          

The Natchez Trace by Linda and Charles George - a book review

 

The Natchez Trace was a trail that was used a lot between Natchez and Nashville.

They had to fight the Indians to keep the path going.

The trail was used by early Spanish and french explores.

The Mississippi river and the Natchez Trace were important to trade.

Along the way there were houses to stay at.

The story of the gold at sutters mill by Conrad Stein - a book review

Before California became a state a boy found a piece of gold by sutters mill. 

Then he showed the milk man the gold and it was in the news the next day.

the men went by boat and some got sea sick.

Some of them went by wagon or foot.   

The gold rush started in 1849 and end in 1853.  

The story of the pony express by Conrad Stein - a book review

William russell wanted to take mail from missouri to sacramento.

Buffalo bill and other young men who were good at riding horses became the pony express.

The riders had to go through any weather and even out run indians.

There were 190 stations with 500 horses along the way.

They couldn't buy enough horses so the telegraph replaced the riders.
